Dog Training: Hand signals in Obedience Training

hand signals in obedience training

All right today I want to talk about hand signals in dog training we get this every day all the time and it happened to get this morning so I figured since we get it so often I never thought of doing any information on this but most of our clients neither have had dog trains before or I've had to have try to do things on their own always try to do things hand signal oriented and in a high level dog training where all the professionals hand signals for us or only for certain things like if I send my dog to an object nice because I need to direct them to where the object is it may always move or change most other things we do not want hand signals now the public thinks that hand signals are cool and that's a well-trained dog to us it's the opposite we call that amateur trained or making us so if the dogs not looking at you sit come down right now they don't realize on hand signals and has to be looking at you to do everything and usually also the way the dogs do those things it's not as fluent and pretty to watch because going off the hand it's not the sound itself so things become delayed so you always see I start everything from the end I never do six days in practice with my own dogs since they come because it's not a real come done and ask anybody who goes to this all the twice we've gone the past hundreds of dollars will you're calm although he knows it I want to see that and then they go sis de Manos account because that's a six day to come that's not really come it's paired together as one thing if the dogs out there moving around and I'm looking at you smelling like perfect right

Dog Obedience Hand Signals Chart

so she was in the grass distracted as soon as you called she picked her head right up and ran straight to you playing with other dogs now they really do come out without looking at you when they're injured in with something else no highly unlikely and I've never had a client do that until we were able to teach these things and get the high level skills we call it off comm whatever they're doing Foom they just turn it flight fight yeah oh my god is not never higher come come come tomorrow that's it you make it come again thank Y huh right there you go right ah so even a protection when we send about to bite the dog biting we're behind some wear out the dog let's go sit down now and they're just listening to everything we tell them from somewhere else that's high level training that's a dog who's very fluent and with a lot of skill this also applies as well when we're doing automatic sits Ottoman healing so when we stop in healing it'll just automatically sit yep good good good you see in all the articel none of the clients that we do this with they ever tell about the city it's implied

so we teach them that the moment that leg stops they just sit it's a pair of action and we're we go sick sick right they just go wait and they sit automatic imply it and they just do it that's high level dog training so I just want to make that point because a lot of people we come across from every day all day long and what do you even think with the hand signals why is it bad because now the dog doesn't love moves you have to listen and I can tell you that how many clients have gone to that you're going to watch this sit sit or calm come and the dog just walks away and intentionally looks away knowing if you have to look at comfy enough to do this signal he has not the respond to it so it's a funny thing to read the dog intentionally sit and dog training hand signals they just turn away and just start walking knowing that as long as they don't look they don't have to comply so in my system not an option and they need to know things from distance fluent and just get to me or do whatever I asked in that moment looking at you and not looking at me far away close does not matter so till next time - all good

Train Your Puppy Not to Bite

train your puppy not to bite

Okay so what I did there there's a few techniques but this is what has worked for Finnegan the best when he got very bitey with me I would scream well what I just said Yelp just like their mom dog with you wow really loud to show hey that hurts then I would completely remove myself from him I actually a lot of times would put him in timeout in a playpen that I have in the living room and just completely remove him and me from the situation doing that honestly several times the first few days beyond that biting wasn't much of an issue yes and then I turn around after not ignoring him anymore and reward him with my marker word which is ye yes and give treats you just basically do that over and over again until they get the point.

How to Stop a Puppy From Biting Your Feet?

I think a lot of families and people get discouraged when they get a buy the puppy some are more bitey than others and there's nothing wrong with that it's how they communicate they're not being malicious are they nope say we're not being malicious we're just we're just playing and that's how they play with each other but this is also how they teach each other they Yelp or kind of bark to get them to stop and don't feel discouraged if it takes longer to practice to get them to stop obviously rewarding and a lot of positive reinforcement is really gonna be where you see the biggest benefit in my opinion what's also really important is that everybody in the family does this it has to be consistent and they need the puppies need to learn that they can't buy you or dad or kids or brothers that nobody you think they can't but if you do this consistently you can usually get them to stop pretty quickly but don't feel discouraged.

If it takes you or your puppy a little bit longer that's okay stay patient stay positive keep progressing daily so I picked up one of his shirts I love supporting good people but definitely check them out down below if you're all about I know it's not completely related to this but if you are all about progressing daily improving yourself figuring out the things in life that you love and then double downing on those this guy's really cool is a lot of energy hi buddy what do you think yeah I'm actually working on teaching this little guy how to skateboard it's something I did with my other lab I will have a articel on that soon so you don't miss that if you want to see more articel on tips and tricks  about stop your dog from bitting or chain the tips and tricks for training your dog a puppy click the link up here yep I have lots of articel that I'm have filmed and M filming and editing and will be etc just about Finnegan high seat baby hi and the link right here.

House Training a Puppy

If you will that I brought home over the years you know I've got a boomerang up there from Australia and I've got a piece of the Berlin wall and I've got oh a little souvenir from Dracula's castle in Transylvania and something from the Cliffs of Moher in Cliffs of Moher and hey buddy something from the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland and there's some sheep from I shared some wool from sharing a sheep in New Zealand and on and on and on and on so I've been traveling the world for the last oh I don't know last 15 or 20 years and I kind of kind of settled down the world is a little bit of a different place these days so you know I'm not as climbed inclined to to get on a plane and go gallivanting all around the world like I used to but I haven't really seen a lot of the United States in a lot of the United States but there's areas that I have not seen of the united states like New England Upper Michigan areas like that and then also there's some areas up in Canada that I would like to see like the Thousand Islands buddy want he's getting a little bit Restless here but coming here buddy you want to just sit sit there you go buddy okay but anyway there's some areas up in Canada like British Columbia also the Thousand Islands is another place.

That I would definitely like to see so anyway for the last year a better part of a year I've been taking care of my 88 year old dad and that in and by itself has been a tremendous responsibility of rewarding responsibility at that but nonetheless it's been a tremendous responsibility and my father is going back home in the next couple weeks and the house is going to be somewhat empty I you know si I thought maybe now is a good time to buy a dog and I'm not the type of guy that does things on impulse I usually thinks they think things through so probably about a couple weeks ago I was just curious to see what kind of puppies they had at this pet store that I Drive by know and then and called petland so I decided to stop in and I had my dad with me and as I was walking down the the windows of the various puppies the you know the various display cases you know I saw this little guy and I knew right away that he was a Bichon Frise and what was significant about that to me was you know I don't know that they normally you don't normally see these little puppies in in the puppy store you usually get a breed like the dog breed like this from a from a professional breeder but anyway so I saw a buddy in there and I thought well gee this must be a sign.

If you will you know and I I didn't buy him on the spot I went home and I did a couple uh you know I did a little bit of research and I went back and came back home did a little bit of research and and I went back and you know did a little bit of more research and finally I decided to to pull the trigger if you will and I'm going to let buddy get down for a moment because he's just fidgeting okay there you go so what anyway I finally decided to buy the the puppy and in doing so prior to buying him I went online and I I looked at some of the things that were probably more more important to me at least initially and that was you know new hotels commonly take pets like a dog what does it cost to to take a dog on an airplane what else was I looking up just just different little things and once I felt confident with those answers the answers to those questions once I felt confident with that I thought well why not you know I'm going to commit and I'm going to buy this puppy so I brought the puppy home and you know I got to tell you I'm not going to say that I underestimated it but what a what a responsibility and definitely a lot of work you know never having had a child I can only imagine what it would be like to have a child so uh you know you're constantly worried and constantly looking out and you know you go out and you know whereas I used to go on leisurely spend a Saturday afternoon kind of going here and go in there.

Dog Whisperer Potty Training

Now I'm constantly looking at the clock and thinking that I got a got to get home to the puppy you know but but anyway so one of the primary things that was on my mind is how to house train a puppy you know you hear all types of different things you know it's stories on how to house train a house train a puppy I'm just looking for come here buddy come here how to house train a puppy and your you know people are so quick to give you advice and some of the advices is fantastic and other other advice is just you know what not not quite on the mark but anyway so before teaching buddy how to sit and how to come and how to roll over and and play dead and all that stuff I knew that my number one priority has got to be how to house train buddy and I took buddy to the vet a couple days after I got him and in doing so in talking to the vet the vet said that in regard to house training she would only recommend one book and it's this book here called puppy training how to housebreak your puppy in seven days and she told me that about well it'd be a week ago tomorrow that she told me to pick up this book puppy training how to cross break your puppy in just seven days and I didn't buy a book until two days ago because I thought that I thought that I had it all figured out.

You know on how to UM body come here come here say you got always watch him he's chewing on a chewing on a little cord over there but anyway so I thought I had it all figured out when it came to to house training I got a crate I got um you know just all types of stuff little wheat pads and and all of that stuff but anyway some of it I was doing right and some of it I was not doing right and anyway so I decided to get this book the other day and I got this book and it was a relatively well it wasn't a relatively it was a very easy book to read what are you doing huh it was a very easy book to read and so what I'm going to do is I'm going to record I'm going to I'm going to record these seven days the next seven days of house training buddy and I'm going to bring you along for these these seven days and we'll see just how successful this is I think that I'm pretty confident that I made some progress and as I mentioned I work from home so that gives me a big advantage as opposed to somebody that was not working at home yes but he tries to chew my button here but but anyway so I work from home and I'll be home with you all the time buddy huh all the time we're going to get to know each other really well so so buddy wants to buddy keeps wanting to get down and and play and you can see he's quite an active little quite an active little puppy for three months old but anyway so I have a really routine life my life is you know.

I get up at 4 a.m. every morning and I'll have my coffee and then depending on what's going on for the day I'll usually go down to the fitness center right right here in the community where I work and then come back maybe have a little breakfast sit down to work at about 8:00 I take a nap usually every afternoon I take a nap and and then in the evening I might go to the to the jacuzzi or or cook myself a nice dinner and watch a little TV and I'm in bed at 9 o'clock at night so with that in mind I'm going to I'll just share with you what the what this guideline says and this this guideline interestingly enough is for a three-month old puppy which is what buddy is so he starts to the author of the book says schedule number one it gives you a couple different schedules I'm going to choose schedule number one which is when the owner is home for a three month old puppy so that's me and he he says you know 8:00 a.m. wakeup well I don't get up at 8 a.m. I do more before 8:00 a.m. than most people do all day long I think that was a advertisement for the turi or the army but but anyway I get up at 4:00 a.m. so I'm just going to basically take this and put 4 a.m. you know and start from 4:00 a.m. so just to give you an idea as to what we're going to be looking at here over the next seven days 4:00 a.m. I'm going to wake up and I'm going to immediately take this little guy outside.

How to Train Your Dog Not to Pee in the House?

I'm not going to make my coffee I'm not going to turn on the Morning News or anything I'm going to wake up and I'm going to immediately take this guy outside to do his business so right buddy that's right you're going to go outside to do your business so 4:00 a.m. it's outside this is going to be like boot camp you know for boot camp for puppies so 8 a.m. we're going to wake up we're going to go outside from 8-10 so they're assuming that he's going to do is business in 10 minutes from 8-10 8:30 he's going to have supervised roam time while alpha that's me I'm the alpha or at least I think so while alpha is having my coffee so that's what I normally do every morning for about 20 minutes I sit down and I have a nice coffee so but he's going to have some supervised roam time while I have my coffee and at 8:30 which would be let's see 8:30 everybody 4:30 4:30 he'll have his food in water and at 4:45 I'm going to take him out and then at 9:00 ago I keep you I keep forgetting to adjust for the time but at 5:00 a.m. he's going to have supervised drom time at 5:00 a.m. at 5:30 I'm going to take him out and then I'm going to confine him I have a crate right so I have a crate I like to call it his little his little den so now he's lying down and just just relaxing he's a lap dog so finally he's doing what he's supposed to do and just lie in my lap but anyway so then I'm going to take him out at 5:30 and then I'm going to confine him from 5:30 and I can find him for two and a half hours.

So that would take right up until 8 o'clock so from 5:30 to 8 o'clock I have Tommy time and then I can you know have my breakfast and I can go down to the gym and have morning coffee with thee with the neighbors here so I come back at at 8 o'clock and I'll take him out and give them a little bit more food in water and and then at about 11:15 if anyway so you get the idea 1:30 he's going to have a free period in the kitchen or supervised and etc etc etc and during this time I'm also going to have to get up in the middle of the night so I go to bed at 9:00 and buddy no he doesn't listen to me but I'll get up at at 9 o'clock and then come on ok so I'll get up at 9 o'clock or again go to bed at 9 o'clock rather and we're going to bed at 9 and I'll set the alarm for about twelve thirty one thing I'm going to try to share little things about raising a puppy that I learned in this book as a snack 7 days go go over the course so one of the things that I learned is that a puppy can't hold its just like a baby you know puppy doesn't have us as much control over its over its bladder and so what you do is that the formula is you take the baby's month in our age and months which in this case is 3 and add 1 so buddy can hold this bladder for about 4 hours and you don't want to really push that too much so give it about 3 and a half hours and you get them out to to do his business so anyway that is that's that and you know I'm just hoping and praying that you know this is probably one of them this is probably the most important consideration to owning a owning a dog is getting a properly trained particularly getting them properly house trained because not only do I want to have to deal with you know cleaning up messes for the next 10 years.

I want to be able to to travel and stay with family and friends and and not have to worry about buddy making a mess on their on their carpet or you know anything like that you know so I've learned over the course of my lifetime that anything that is anything that is rewarding really really really requires a significant amount of sacrificing and hard work now I'm not saying that the next seven days are going to be a tremendous amount of sacrifice and hard work because you just look at that look at that little puppy there you know and how much sacrifice and how much work could a little guy like that require you know with a face like that you know huh buddy huh so anyway we'll see how this whole thing comes along and I hope that I hope by this time next week buddy is it is is house-trained I hope your house-trained next week and then we can celebrate and I'm going to take buddy and my dad to to Key West Florida the the southernmost point we're going to get a nice photograph at that big boy huh with you and I and and Grandpa huh yeah so anyway enough for the end up for the introduction and if the house training goes well then maybe we'll start doing some articel about how to house train puppies on some other aspects of training buddy but right now buddy is oh I don't nobody is being buddy you know he just wants to get down and and play and you know everything else that a little puppy does so listen goodbye for now and we'll see you at we'll see you at 4 a.m. in the morning motely buddy huh 4 a.m. bright and early.

Separation Anxiety in Dogs — How You Can Help?

separation anxiety in dogs

Hi welcome to ultimate pet vet I'm Jackson Dam and today we're talking about a tough topic dog separation anxiety you know separation anxiety and dogs can can can really really be pretty stressful for both for both the pet and for the pet owner you know dogs with separation anxiety the things can get quite destructive it can get really expensive as far as losing things in your house to to you know a dog either scratching or chewing so you know it's a really good topic for us to talk about so let's kind of begin with with the why and kind of work ourselves out from there you know dogs you know when you think about sort of dogs and your normal dogs mentality I mean dogs as a general rule or pack animals and and there are at there they're most comfortable usually when they're in a group now you know depending on the dog and their lifestyle you know a pack can mean any number of things but you know if you if your dog is not one that frequently lives with a bunch of other dogs then you're their pack you and your family are their pack.

How do You Treat a Dog With Anxiety?

So that's where they're they're comfortable being so for them to be anxious and uncomfortable when everybody leaves them alone when you think about it sort of through that lens is it's not it's not super surprising that doesn't make it any less a problem but but you know it is that is the issue that we're sort of up against is it's is it's it's it's not necessarily in their nature always to want to be alone now you know the amazing thing about dogs is they're so good at adapting to our our lifestyle that that many of them just figure out how to deal with it but clearly there are ones that that have trouble with it you know there and certainly there are there are some breeds of dogs that are a little bit more prone than others when it comes to separation anxiety but to be honest with you it can occur in any breed of dog you know but but as a general rule I mean the dogs that tend to be super high-energy dogs to begin with are often the ones that are that that that are going to have a little our problems with being left alone in addition to.

That you also have to think about what that dogs life experiences you know so for example if you have a dog that maybe came from a rescue situation where they had been abandoned previously you know that's then that's gonna be kind of an emotional trigger for them in a way that maybe it wouldn't have been had they not had had that life experience so there's there you know there's a lot of different reasons why animals can have separation anxiety but of course you know probably your main question is this what do I do about it and and you know there are there are a number of things to do about it but I think the the two things that I would that I'll start and probably finish by saying is number one there's no easy fix here this is it's it's a it's a long process and and it requires patience and number two it is pretty much impossible to medicate separation anxiety away from a dog whether that's pharmaceuticals or natural medication.

Dog Breeds With Separation Anxiety

It is an extremely rare occurrence that any kind of medication will solve this problem so having said that you know let you know let's look at let's look at dogs that have separation anxiety kind of kind of you know through through looking at perhaps a person that has an anxiety disorder so you know people that have anxiety disorders you know frequently you know they're probably going to some sort of therapy to kind of help them manage that they may be on some kind of medication to also help them for dog separation anxiety be a little bit of calmer but you know just like with a person with a dog there's gonna be triggers that sort of set these things off so you know dogs that have separation anxiety they become acutely aware of all of the sort of sights and sounds that happen when they're about to be left alone so for example you're putting on your shoes you're picking up your car keys whatever it is that you may do in preparation to leave the house they become very attuned to that you know dogs understand it cause an effect a relationship in so much as you know when this set of circumstances happened then I get left alone and what happens is as soon as they start hearing and seeing those things.

They start getting emotionally spun up and working themselves up into a frenzy frequently even before you've left so one suggestion is to try and desensitize them to these kinds of these kinds of things so you know the way that you do that is go through all of the motions that you would go through when you're leaving your house but then don't leave you know pick up your keys put on your shoes whatever it may be and then just plop back down on the couch and hang out with the dog what you're trying to do is you're trying to get them to understand that it's that it's that you know the bad thing from their perspective you leaving is not always going to happen and and that it's okay for them to just to just be relaxed in addition to that you know another thing that trainers often recommend is both when you're getting the leave getting ready to leave the house and also when you come back don't make a big deal of it with the dog you know they key off of your excitement and your anxiety.

Rescue Dog Separation Anxiety

So you know if when you do leave the house you know you don't don't even say goodbye just walk out the door like it's no big deal and then when you come back in assuming that the dog is somewhat frantic to see you the recommendation is is that you completely ignore them until they calm down once they calm down then you interact with them then you tell them that they're a good dog so they start to get the understanding that you only interact with them when they're calm and they're relaxed if you're trying to calm them down when they're all spun up and frantic then basically what you're doing is is you're reinforcing that behavior you're telling them it's good for them to be that way because when they're that way then you're giving them treats and telling them what a great dog they are so you can see how as people sometimes.

We inadvertently reinforce the behaviors that were that we're trying to get rid of you know and and that's that's a great reason particularly with these difficult separation anxiety dogs to get a trainer involved big I will tell you that we as people are intuitively really bad at communicating with dogs with what they what we want them to do and trainers are really really good at it it's amazing that if you watch a really good trainer they can get a dog to do almost anything in about a minute and it's just it's just fascinating to watch you know so going beyond those sorts of issues I mean other things that you can do is try and give your dog something to do when you're away if they like chewing on bones if there's you know if there's you know you can get like a toy that has treats in it that they can sort of play with something to keep their mind occupied.

Sometimes leaving the television on can be beneficial there have actually been some studies that have shown that certain types of music particularly certain types of classical music can actually be calming to dogs so that's something that you can do as well as you know is put some music on now remember you don't want to put the music on right before you leave because then the dog is gonna start to associate every time the music goes on you go away so this is something that you have to have on when you're home as well so hopefully you like classical music taking one step beyond that we can look at things like like either supplements or medications there certainly are options out there as far as supplements and medications that can help dogs be a little bit calmer you know certainly from a supplement standpoint I do a lot of herbal therapy in my practice and you know I might use things like like valerian like skullcap like a certain extract of oats called Avena which can be very very calming in in dogs.

Dog Separation Anxiety at Night

On the more pharmaceutical side you can put dogs or your veterinarian can put your dog on on medications like Prozac and you know despite what you might think about you know Prozac the side effects profile for a drug like that is actually really really limited in dogs and a lot of them seem like they feel better on on medications like that and and the goal with these sorts of medications is hopefully if we can get them calmer change their pattern of behavior sometimes you know four months six months a year down the road you can wean them off the medication because then you've just changed their pattern or behavior and they don't necessarily revert back to where they were but these are things you know particularly the the pharmaceutical end of it that you really need to discuss with your veterinarian and work with a trainer.

All at the same time because remember as I said this is it's it's not an it's not an easy path it's not a quick fix and you really really have to take your time and make sure you're doing this right so you know just just you know to summarize if you have a dog with separation anxiety try and desensitize them to the things that that happen when you come and go don't reward they're sort of frantic behavior by paying attention to them if it's if you're not having any luck definitely get a trainer involved and if need be get your veterinarian involved as well because it's going to be a team effort to get these sorts of things resolved how to help a dog with separation anxiety so that's that's the long and short of separation anxiety I hope that was helpful for you thanks a lot and have a great day.

How To Teach Any Dog To Stop Pulling And Walk Nicely On A Loose Leash

how to teach any dog to stop pulling and walk nicely on a loose leash

All right what's going on folks why are you pack backpack masters dog training it's real windy out so I'm gonna try to talk close to the camera today for several years now so many of you have asked me to make a articel mostly walking right how to get your dog to stop pulling on a leash and forever I've said I don't really teach it because my dogs just do it my clients dogs just do it as part of the training process but you know what so many people struggle with it I'm gonna give you 6 things today 6 very basic small things that will help any owner any dog master this very easily okay we're not gonna use any tools right now no prong collars no e-collars no nothing very simple that anyone can conquer this very important task all right number one the first thing you have to conquer you saw that door open I gave him plenty of space.

Dog Pulls on Leash Tried Everything

I don't ask for anything I don't have him sit down step I don't care what he does all's I need is him to respect that space so that means when the door opens he's not to blow through it he's supposed to respect my space and relax and then I can move forward that is number one if you come blowin through the door with that dog you fail right there you're not ready to move ahead you have to conquer that first any release word some people use clickers I use verbal markers like a lot of people do so for the people that know nothing about dog pulling on leash solutions dog training what that means is you either use a clicker or a reward marker you ask me to do something he does it you say yes or you click and then you follow with the reward very simple show you in a second the release marker is also very important guys you won't believe how many people.

I work with that don't have a release command for their dog it's very important that your dog knows when he's to be in command important but it's also important that he knows what he doesn't have to be in command it makes things very confusing when you don't have that release marker I use free dog I'm gonna show you what I mean about the least pressure right now okay when we mark it but again use a reward marker and a release command and then the next thing we got to talk about I don't know if I said this already sorry is the dog has to understand leash pressure okay what I mean by a leash pressure is straight line please pressure I'm gonna show you so this is the first thing besides the door I'm going to show you when I say least pressure you see me okay there Sophia.

Dog Pulling on Leash Choking

Okay so I do have food on me the dog is here he has to learn how to yield to the leash pressure when I say straight line I mean the leashes and like this you put it flat parallel to the ground you apply a little pressure that's very light pressure guys I know that's very basic and very simple but you'd be amazed on how many people don't teach leash pressure the dog has to understand it the next thing we're gonna do turnabout's per the 180s what this means is if my dog is on my left which he's going to be I'm going to just walk okay I'm gonna walk forward and I'm gonna turn a 180 degrees away from the dog that means if the dogs on my left I'm gonna turn to the right and go the other way what's going to happen one of two things is going to happen either he's gonna keep going and when he gets to the end of each will feel the tension and he'll turn and catch up to me.

That's a good thing that's what we want the other thing that may happen morning it's at the end of the leash he will signal even and that social pressure will cause him to turn around follow me that's also it looks like this very basic okay very simple you see ask him was not going anywhere he's staying with me he's a good candidate for this is all he walked pretty good with me from the start he does like the ball and forage okay so especially for the bigger dogs very basic very simple guys just practice turning walking up and down the street turn in a 180 degrees away from the dog get him to follow you whether it's the leash helping or him seeing your body going that way just follow both they're very beneficial the next thing we have to teach the dog to follow the left lake we want him along the left leg right that's where he needs to be the easiest way to do that is to show him.

How to Stop your Dog Pulling on the Lead?

I'm gonna show you what we do break it down into little baby steps to show him what we mean by sticking by the left leg let me show you he's right here I don't want him moving I want him here with my left the food was showing you guys the rewarding right here but you understand what I'm saying let him follow the left lake but you have to show him that I'm going through that very fast I'm not gonna break it down any any more than that girl's will go on forever the last thing very very effective and I never see your left so he starts forging a little bit you make a left turn into them what happens is you wind up bumping the dog he has to pay attention to where you're at but I'm gonna go one step further and it's a lot better than just turning a left turn into him so what we're gonna do now is as I'm walking I'm gonna turn 180 degrees all the way around like I did earlier but this time not away from the dog.

Remember we turn to the right this time I'm gonna make a left into the dog but most importantly I'm gonna take this right leg I'm gonna swing it all the way around what happens is the dog follows is gonna stick to the left leg and it starts working on that rear end awareness where he starts turning into it so for all you folks that love seeing my dogs flip into a hill this is gonna swing the right leg and have the dog follow the left leg because then I'll walk down this way and I'll show you and you start yanking on the wrong you start hitting buttons on the e-collar what you are doing right from the start is creating conflict conflict is the biggest enemy in dog training okay there's truly want to be next to me and learn through me how to be with me this way the tools in the back end the tool is able to work like it's meant to work for see.

What a lot of people do is they put the prong collar on the dog the dog falls and they start yanking that's not how the prong collar is supposed to be used okay and that's why they're always in the spotlight as a negative tool but if you go through this process and the dog understands leash pressure then with the prong collar with two fingers very gentle pressure and the prong collar works wonderfully with that I mean just fantastic it makes it very easy guys effortless same thing with the e collar don't put an e collar on a dog if he has to be trained properly with it you guys know how I do it right you go for a walk the dog starts forging they're pulling out then by using very little leash pressure just a tap tap on the e collar.

Best Solution for Dog Pulling on Leash

The dog fixes himself and to be honest with you any dog that I trained I won't even need Lee's pressure so if a scum starts pulling ahead of me and we're on a walk and he's got his e collar on if I just tap tap he's gonna fix himself it makes it effortless guys and here's the thing why this is so important is the structured walk is the most important train training tool we have in dog training it's so beneficial and so effective and can create so many well-behaved dogs in the household for anybody every person every dog on the planet should be capable of that it's the most simplest form of what comes natural to a dog correct and what it does if you can master that it creates happy owners it keeps dogs out of shelters and keep the dogs from dying.

You have to master the structured walk the structure walk again is walking at your side you're relaxed there's no tension the dog is relaxed is one job is to follow you there's no sniffing there's no pain there's no pooping there's no fixating on anything it's just a very natural beautiful walk very therapeutic for both why the release command is so important that we talked about earlier then when you find a spot where you want your dog to go be a dog or okay wait free dog ask him free dog Luca you're releasing the dog and now he knows he no longer has to be in command he can go do all his doggy things he can pee on things he could poop because it can be a dog it's very important guys very important this kind of simple stuff keeps dogs in the home and out of the shelter's keeps dogs from dying that's simple the most effective training tool we had and it's not being utilized you gotta utilize it the piece. I hope you have found how to stop your dog pulling on the leash in this articel. Thanks and check out more of our.

A Guide to Choosing the Best Dog Trainer for You and Your Dog

a guide to choosing the best dog trainer for you and your dog

You Border Collies, you're always passed out sleeping such lazy dogs, anyone with a border collie. I'm committed to helping you teach your dog everything for free right here, but maybe you still feel like you could stand to have some one-on-one help from a how to find a good dog trainer. Today I'm going to give you some tips on what to look for and what to avoid. Let’s evolve the dog training world together. Not all dog trainers are the same and there are a myriad of different dog training approaches out there. If you've even done some basic homework on dog training methods you'll understand that broadly speaking there are two major ways that dog trainers attempt to teach dog.

On one hand you have more traditional trainers, who have a heavy emphasis on special training tools that are designed to physically correct a dog and there are three main types of collars these trainers use. Choke chains, prawn collars, and electric shock collars. These tools are specifically engineered to be unpleasant to dogs, that's because they rely on a principle called experiential avoidance that is teaching the dog to avoid pain or discomfort, for example if your dog jumps up you give them a quick firm yank or a shock around the net to communicate no stop that. Anything that requires you to be this forceful with your dog is beneath you. As a 21st century citizen of course this is the most basic reactive and ineffective way to teach a dog for long term results. While I strongly discourage the use of these tools. If you're an average person out there using them, I understand that you're doing so because you took the advice of someone that you trusted to give you good advice.

How to Train a Dog Without Force?

The point here is just to critically examine two competing dog training method .Even if you're a professional dog trainer I'm not saying that the way you teach dogs is a reflection on your personal character. It's not about you, it's about the methods that said if you are a professional trainer and you are advising the public to teach this way understand that it is the goal of the dog training revolution to educate your client base. So that the demand for your services will be reduced enough to keep your business from remaining viable. The public just deserves better advice than that. When you press a trainer who implements the use of these tools, they're usually quick to say that you just have to use them properly. Then there are those of us who don't think there is a proper way to use pain to teach a dog. In an era where we have the best information to date on teaching dogs that get better results without compromising the trust between a person and their dog.

Since these methods most often rely on a superficial collar. You must understand that the moment that collar comes off, the unwanted behaviors almost always promptly returned and it becomes clear that deep learning hasn't occurred. The dog is only learn to comply because they're wearing the collar. This is why it is a rare thing to see these trainers ever take these colors off even with their own dogs. Colors like this are just a patch and they're not really compatible with long-lasting authentic teaching. Furthermore, it's just a pretty shallow way to communicate with a dog. Unfortunately many of these trainers lack a basic grasp of modern animal behavior principles beyond punishments and reinforcements. In the United States at least the field of dog training isn't regulated. So anyone can wake up and call themselves a dog trainer. Whether we dog trainers like it or not we exist in a scientific profession. There is no room for scientifically illiterate dog trainers advising the public. Nonetheless this remains commonplace. On the other hand there are trainers who do teach dogs without forceful methods these trainers are usually more educated about more advanced teaching methods and conditioning principles that rely on newer and better scientific information.

Of course many trainers will fall somewhere in between on this spectrum. I attribute much of my early success in dog training to really prioritizing the bond between a person and a dog. During the teaching process and every training approach I implement revolves around that basic question. Does this approach encourage a meaningful loving bond between a person and a dog. It’s more than just a feel-good philosophy - nothing achieves rapid results faster than a great relationship. Some patience and raising a dog has far more in common with raising a kid than it does programming a dog with some gimmicky collar. There’s only so much communication that can occur when you rely on a strategy of Corrections devoid of authentic connection. So this is what Ollie looks like conscious, see when you and your dog are having a blast together. Training sessions are likely to last considerably longer because number one frustration is a lot less likely to be an issue for you or your dog's.

How do I Pick the Best Puppy?

Less neural chemicals are present in greater quantities when training is enjoyable. A good trainer is going to remain current on the latest science and ethics in our industry and you'll want to make sure that any trainer you choose is well versed in basic animal behavior principles. Now here's one glaring red flag to watch out for with many traditional trainers. They are virtually always at odds with the most cutting-edge educated animal behavior professionals best dog trainer and they are essentially asking you to accept broad absolute beliefs largely based on superstitions, anecdotes, misinformation and even metaphysics, for example a super common myth that persists is that. If you let your dog out of the door before you or if you let them on the furniture that you're somehow encouraging a transfer of power to your dog. Oh no you know please you okay, you've obviously achieved the upper hand in this relationship now. Now there is no evidence for any of this nonsense. Now I'm not saying we have it all figured out but to believe these trainers are advising you appropriately is to believe that some of the world's leading universities and animal behavior professionals with far more education that exist.

On the cutting edge of animal behavior are not as smart as your latest pop-up dog training school telling. You to strap an electric collar or other metal collar on your dog. That is what you have to believe. If you were to conclude that punishment based training methods are better and should be favored. Any dog trainer who insists that your dog's behavior problems or hyperactivity or somehow, due to some underlying dog the human dominance or that you need to be a pack leader or the Alpha is not the dog trainer for you. So many of the governing principle is adhered to by old-fashioned trainers, particularly issues surrounding dog to human dominance which is rampant in the dog training community have been so extensively debunked. That an informed and can no longer take these training methods seriously. In fact it is professional incompetence to continue to promote, such methods organizations like the American veterinary society of animal behavior and the association of professional dog trainers have very much come out against using methods designed to exercise dominance towards dogs since these methods can have a whole host of side effects.

Not the least of which is a deterioration in the relationship between you and your dog. See dogs are so much more than just instinctual beings who are either dominant or submissive. Enter tape Abul of extraordinary acts and deep complex emotions and thought processes. Modern research is continually taking us in the direction of a more thoughtful approach that takes into account our dog's intelligence their depth and 21st century ethics. Good trainers understand that eliminating unwanted behaviors requires prevention accompanied by hands-on teaching over a period of time. That’s not to say that applying a harsh correction won't partially discourage unwanted behavior, but punishing behavior like this only addresses the symptom rather than the actual cause of the undesired behavior. I think there's a lot of confusion around this because it can be really tough to get through to a young athletic super energetic amped up dog. I totally concede that, but there's such a simple way to get past this and that's regular exercise.

How to Choose a Dog Trainer?

That’s why I always continually stress that it's not realistic to expect a very high energy dog. To retain new concepts until they're overflowing energy has been released, ideally just before a training session. If a trainer is combating energy and trying to teach basic obedience at the same time, then they're destined for a more unpleasant. Even more violent sometimes and ultimately far less effective training sessions to me and many of you that is primitive. One method has you forcing your dog to do things while encountering resistance and the other has your dog gladly willfully cooperating and enjoying themselves. Inspiring your dog to want to do something from the inside outwards rather than forcing them from the outside in is what works long-term. Now I have a suspicion as to why punishment based training is pretty persistent. Methods that rely on brute force are the most basic instinctual ways for us as people to bend animals to our will and while there's no good sign suggesting that dogs are concerned with applying dominance towards people.

There is overwhelming evidence that humans are very concerned with dominating animals. Teaching a dog to control their impulses is central when raising any dog. However it seems that teaching some people to control their knee-jerk impulses well that's the toughest thing to accomplish. We spent thousands of years domesticating dogs that were good at taking direction from people. We didn't continue to breed the dogs that didn't listen to us. Let’s take advantage of this and build that depth full communication together. This single fact is what's most often overlooked by professional trainers when teaching dogs. So how do we begin to turn the tide and show people that there are more intelligent ways to teach dogs. Well that starts with those who have made it their profession to advise the public professional dog trainers and the more educated we and the public become the lower.

The demand will be for trainers who insist that harsh even painful methods should be used. I want to tell you guys a quick personal story. You might know that pet Flo is my main sponsor here and when I was in talks with them about working together and promoting the company here on this articel, I requested that they make it their policy not to sell choke prong and electric collars. They were all about it and that's significant because virtually all of the big pet supply chains still sell these outdated tools. For a company the size of Peplow, to take a stand like that on this issue spoke volumes to me. I'm asking you to get your pet food and supplies from a company that supports the continued evolution. I hope you have found what first time dog owners should know in this articel, and you can make starting fast.
