Well hello my name is Tam and this is my buddy no really this is my buddy this is uh this is a little bijon Frise puppy that i bought about a week ago and i was trying to decide a name and I decided to call call the little guy buddy so buddy was born on February 8th and I brought him home from the pet store I brought you home from the pet store a week ago you know and I I thought that I was going to do way um I wanted to do a series of articel about how to potty train a dog in 7 days as I go through the experience of being a first-time first-time owner of a little little puppy like this so I wanted to give you a little bit of background about myself and then some some thoughts about bringing this little guy into my life here I am a self-employed web entrepreneur and I like to say entrepreneur although a lot of people would say would say web designer but anyway so I've never been married and nope no children and for a long time I thought about getting a dog but the my life situation just really wasn't just really wasn't right because I was doing so much traveling as I sit here in my home office and beautiful Southwest Florida you can see my my wall of my office behind me just adorned with various items artifacts souvenirs.
House Training a Puppy
If you will that I brought home over the years you know I've got a boomerang up there from Australia and I've got a piece of the Berlin wall and I've got oh a little souvenir from Dracula's castle in Transylvania and something from the Cliffs of Moher in Cliffs of Moher and hey buddy something from the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland and there's some sheep from I shared some wool from sharing a sheep in New Zealand and on and on and on and on so I've been traveling the world for the last oh I don't know last 15 or 20 years and I kind of kind of settled down the world is a little bit of a different place these days so you know I'm not as climbed inclined to to get on a plane and go gallivanting all around the world like I used to but I haven't really seen a lot of the United States in a lot of the United States but there's areas that I have not seen of the united states like New England Upper Michigan areas like that and then also there's some areas up in Canada that I would like to see like the Thousand Islands buddy want he's getting a little bit Restless here but coming here buddy you want to just sit sit there you go buddy okay but anyway there's some areas up in Canada like British Columbia also the Thousand Islands is another place.
That I would definitely like to see so anyway for the last year a better part of a year I've been taking care of my 88 year old dad and that in and by itself has been a tremendous responsibility of rewarding responsibility at that but nonetheless it's been a tremendous responsibility and my father is going back home in the next couple weeks and the house is going to be somewhat empty I you know si I thought maybe now is a good time to buy a dog and I'm not the type of guy that does things on impulse I usually thinks they think things through so probably about a couple weeks ago I was just curious to see what kind of puppies they had at this pet store that I Drive by know and then and called petland so I decided to stop in and I had my dad with me and as I was walking down the the windows of the various puppies the you know the various display cases you know I saw this little guy and I knew right away that he was a Bichon Frise and what was significant about that to me was you know I don't know that they normally you don't normally see these little puppies in in the puppy store you usually get a breed like the dog breed like this from a from a professional breeder but anyway so I saw a buddy in there and I thought well gee this must be a sign.
If you will you know and I I didn't buy him on the spot I went home and I did a couple uh you know I did a little bit of research and I went back and came back home did a little bit of research and and I went back and you know did a little bit of more research and finally I decided to to pull the trigger if you will and I'm going to let buddy get down for a moment because he's just fidgeting okay there you go so what anyway I finally decided to buy the the puppy and in doing so prior to buying him I went online and I I looked at some of the things that were probably more more important to me at least initially and that was you know new hotels commonly take pets like a dog what does it cost to to take a dog on an airplane what else was I looking up just just different little things and once I felt confident with those answers the answers to those questions once I felt confident with that I thought well why not you know I'm going to commit and I'm going to buy this puppy so I brought the puppy home and you know I got to tell you I'm not going to say that I underestimated it but what a what a responsibility and definitely a lot of work you know never having had a child I can only imagine what it would be like to have a child so uh you know you're constantly worried and constantly looking out and you know you go out and you know whereas I used to go on leisurely spend a Saturday afternoon kind of going here and go in there.
Dog Whisperer Potty Training
Now I'm constantly looking at the clock and thinking that I got a got to get home to the puppy you know but but anyway so one of the primary things that was on my mind is how to house train a puppy you know you hear all types of different things you know it's stories on how to house train a house train a puppy I'm just looking for come here buddy come here how to house train a puppy and your you know people are so quick to give you advice and some of the advices is fantastic and other other advice is just you know what not not quite on the mark but anyway so before teaching buddy how to sit and how to come and how to roll over and and play dead and all that stuff I knew that my number one priority has got to be how to house train buddy and I took buddy to the vet a couple days after I got him and in doing so in talking to the vet the vet said that in regard to house training she would only recommend one book and it's this book here called puppy training how to housebreak your puppy in seven days and she told me that about well it'd be a week ago tomorrow that she told me to pick up this book puppy training how to cross break your puppy in just seven days and I didn't buy a book until two days ago because I thought that I thought that I had it all figured out.
You know on how to UM body come here come here say you got always watch him he's chewing on a chewing on a little cord over there but anyway so I thought I had it all figured out when it came to to house training I got a crate I got um you know just all types of stuff little wheat pads and and all of that stuff but anyway some of it I was doing right and some of it I was not doing right and anyway so I decided to get this book the other day and I got this book and it was a relatively well it wasn't a relatively it was a very easy book to read what are you doing huh it was a very easy book to read and so what I'm going to do is I'm going to record I'm going to I'm going to record these seven days the next seven days of house training buddy and I'm going to bring you along for these these seven days and we'll see just how successful this is I think that I'm pretty confident that I made some progress and as I mentioned I work from home so that gives me a big advantage as opposed to somebody that was not working at home yes but he tries to chew my button here but but anyway so I work from home and I'll be home with you all the time buddy huh all the time we're going to get to know each other really well so so buddy wants to buddy keeps wanting to get down and and play and you can see he's quite an active little quite an active little puppy for three months old but anyway so I have a really routine life my life is you know.
I get up at 4 a.m. every morning and I'll have my coffee and then depending on what's going on for the day I'll usually go down to the fitness center right right here in the community where I work and then come back maybe have a little breakfast sit down to work at about 8:00 I take a nap usually every afternoon I take a nap and and then in the evening I might go to the to the jacuzzi or or cook myself a nice dinner and watch a little TV and I'm in bed at 9 o'clock at night so with that in mind I'm going to I'll just share with you what the what this guideline says and this this guideline interestingly enough is for a three-month old puppy which is what buddy is so he starts to the author of the book says schedule number one it gives you a couple different schedules I'm going to choose schedule number one which is when the owner is home for a three month old puppy so that's me and he he says you know 8:00 a.m. wakeup well I don't get up at 8 a.m. I do more before 8:00 a.m. than most people do all day long I think that was a advertisement for the turi or the army but but anyway I get up at 4:00 a.m. so I'm just going to basically take this and put 4 a.m. you know and start from 4:00 a.m. so just to give you an idea as to what we're going to be looking at here over the next seven days 4:00 a.m. I'm going to wake up and I'm going to immediately take this little guy outside.
How to Train Your Dog Not to Pee in the House?
I'm not going to make my coffee I'm not going to turn on the Morning News or anything I'm going to wake up and I'm going to immediately take this guy outside to do his business so right buddy that's right you're going to go outside to do your business so 4:00 a.m. it's outside this is going to be like boot camp you know for boot camp for puppies so 8 a.m. we're going to wake up we're going to go outside from 8-10 so they're assuming that he's going to do is business in 10 minutes from 8-10 8:30 he's going to have supervised roam time while alpha that's me I'm the alpha or at least I think so while alpha is having my coffee so that's what I normally do every morning for about 20 minutes I sit down and I have a nice coffee so but he's going to have some supervised roam time while I have my coffee and at 8:30 which would be let's see 8:30 everybody 4:30 4:30 he'll have his food in water and at 4:45 I'm going to take him out and then at 9:00 ago I keep you I keep forgetting to adjust for the time but at 5:00 a.m. he's going to have supervised drom time at 5:00 a.m. at 5:30 I'm going to take him out and then I'm going to confine him I have a crate right so I have a crate I like to call it his little his little den so now he's lying down and just just relaxing he's a lap dog so finally he's doing what he's supposed to do and just lie in my lap but anyway so then I'm going to take him out at 5:30 and then I'm going to confine him from 5:30 and I can find him for two and a half hours.
So that would take right up until 8 o'clock so from 5:30 to 8 o'clock I have Tommy time and then I can you know have my breakfast and I can go down to the gym and have morning coffee with thee with the neighbors here so I come back at at 8 o'clock and I'll take him out and give them a little bit more food in water and and then at about 11:15 if anyway so you get the idea 1:30 he's going to have a free period in the kitchen or supervised and etc etc etc and during this time I'm also going to have to get up in the middle of the night so I go to bed at 9:00 and buddy no he doesn't listen to me but I'll get up at at 9 o'clock and then come on ok so I'll get up at 9 o'clock or again go to bed at 9 o'clock rather and we're going to bed at 9 and I'll set the alarm for about twelve thirty one thing I'm going to try to share little things about raising a puppy that I learned in this book as a snack 7 days go go over the course so one of the things that I learned is that a puppy can't hold its just like a baby you know puppy doesn't have us as much control over its over its bladder and so what you do is that the formula is you take the baby's month in our age and months which in this case is 3 and add 1 so buddy can hold this bladder for about 4 hours and you don't want to really push that too much so give it about 3 and a half hours and you get them out to to do his business so anyway that is that's that and you know I'm just hoping and praying that you know this is probably one of them this is probably the most important consideration to owning a owning a dog is getting a properly trained particularly getting them properly house trained because not only do I want to have to deal with you know cleaning up messes for the next 10 years.
I want to be able to to travel and stay with family and friends and and not have to worry about buddy making a mess on their on their carpet or you know anything like that you know so I've learned over the course of my lifetime that anything that is anything that is rewarding really really really requires a significant amount of sacrificing and hard work now I'm not saying that the next seven days are going to be a tremendous amount of sacrifice and hard work because you just look at that look at that little puppy there you know and how much sacrifice and how much work could a little guy like that require you know with a face like that you know huh buddy huh so anyway we'll see how this whole thing comes along and I hope that I hope by this time next week buddy is it is is house-trained I hope your house-trained next week and then we can celebrate and I'm going to take buddy and my dad to to Key West Florida the the southernmost point we're going to get a nice photograph at that big boy huh with you and I and and Grandpa huh yeah so anyway enough for the end up for the introduction and if the house training goes well then maybe we'll start doing some articel about how to house train puppies on some other aspects of training buddy but right now buddy is oh I don't nobody is being buddy you know he just wants to get down and and play and you know everything else that a little puppy does so listen goodbye for now and we'll see you at we'll see you at 4 a.m. in the morning motely buddy huh 4 a.m. bright and early.
